FiOS1, Verizon's First Local TV Channel, Debuts in Washington, D.C., Metro Area

Beginning Friday (March 30), Verizon FiOS TV subscribers in the Washington metro area will be able to tune to a new local television channel, FiOS1, a one-stop shop for local weather, traffic, news, sports and community features. FiOS1 is Verizon's first owned-and-operated television channel in the United States, and the company expects to launch similar channels in other markets this year.

A federal judge issued a permanent injunction on Friday 03/23/07, barring Vonage Holdings Corp. from using key Internet phone call technology owned by rival Verizon Communications Inc.
U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton granted Verizon's request for an injunction prohibiting Vonage from using some voice-over-Internet Protocol technologies that allow consumers to make calls over the Internet.

Jurors in a patent infringement case before the U.S. District Court for the Virginia Eastern District Thursday (March 8) ruled that VoIP service provider Vonage Holdings Corp. infringed three U.S. patents held by Verizon. The following statement should be attributed to John Thorne, Verizon senior vice president and deputy general counsel:
"A jury today found that Vonage Holdings Corp. has infringed three United States patents awarded to Verizon covering methods of offering commercial- quality VoIP services, including wireless access to VoIP.
"Patents encourage and protect innovations that benefit consumers, create jobs and keep the economy growing. Verizon's innovations are central to its strategy of building the best communications networks in the world.

FCC Acts to Speed Cable TV Competition

The Federal Communications Commission Monday (March 5) released its final written order to increase consumer choice by speeding the entry of new competitors into the cable television market. The Commission acted to streamline the local franchising process through which companies gain local approvals to offer subscription video services. The order was adopted on December 20, 2006.
