Light No longer travels in a straight line thanks to Fiber Optics breakthrough

 Remember the little lesson you learned in science class regarding light? They told you light travels in a straight line? Well, it was all a lie. An attempt to keep your brain from exploding. That is the theory at least to several Fiber optics inventors at Corning a company best known to consumers for its sturdy cookware. We can't go too deep into the technical details - the company exhibits CIA-levels of paranoia about its inventions.
About the only thing optical fiber can't do is turn corners. Until now. Take a look at the latest breakthrough in glass.
Corning's researchers figured out a way to keep the light going as it turns corners - lots and lots of corners. But essentially Corning's technology infuses the cladding that surrounds the fiber's narrow core with microscopic guardrails called nanostructures. They help keep the light from seeping out of the fiber, even when it is wound around a pencil - treatment that normally would render it completely useless.

Fios Reaches One Millionth Customer Milestone

 More than 1 million households and businesses across the country now enjoy the benefits of Verizon's FiOS service, delivered straight to their doors on the nation's most advanced, all-digital, all-fiber network.
The Rich and Marjorie Bayer family of Massapequa, N.Y., are the one millionth customer to receive a FiOS Internet installation since the service was launched in August 2004. The family of five also enjoys voice service and FiOS TV over Verizon's groundbreaking network.
Nearly half a million customers now have Verizon's state-of-the-art FiOS TV service in their homes. FiOS TV was introduced in September 2005, just 20 months ago.
